Hsinchu Night Markets

Night markets are a central part of experiencing Taiwan. Sadly, many have been dying out. With rising rent prices and the pandemic, it is hard to know which of these culinary centers still exist. One of the larger night markets in Hsinchu that is still pumping is the Green Grass Lake Night Market (青草湖夜市).

With rows upon rows of stalls selling everything from dumplings to hotdogs, you’ll be able to enjoy all the best of what Taiwan has to offer. Other than just the street food, the Green Grass Lake Night Market offers a unique glimpse into local culture. With plastic stools and low tables, the market makes for the perfect place to people-watch.

Getting to Qingcao Lake

Green Grass Lake, also called Qingcao Lake, is located just outside downtown Hsinchu. Even though it may be a bit of a trek, the lake is still within biking distance of the city. Contrary to the name, Green Grass Lake Night Market is actually situated a bit past the lake itself. The question you may be asking yourself now is, “how do I get to the night market?”

Right between Green Grass Lake and the town of Baoshan (寶山), you’ll find the night market off Minghu Road (明湖路). Like the lake, it is possible to bike to the food stalls. The trip is slightly uphill and will tire out less experienced bikers. If you are looking to save some energy, look into taking bus 71 from Hsinchu Train Station for 15 NT (0.50 USD). Being a night market, be sure to be updated on the last bus service back into the city.

The Wednesday Market

If the work week is getting you down, the night market is sure to lift your spirits. Unfortunately, if you were waiting for the weekend to visit Green Grass Lake Night Market, you’d be left disappointed. The night market only opens on Wednesdays from 6 pm. Wandering the stalls and perusing the various snacks might be just what you need to coast you to Friday.

Everything from steaks to hot dogs are made in a uniquely Taiwanese fashion. Don’t be surprised to find lines snaking through the crowds of people exploring the market. The hardest decision you’ll have to make is where to eat first. Hopefully, you came hungry because you’ll be wanting to try nearly every piping hot skewer and dish you pass.

What will catch your eye, however, are the various games found tucked in between whisps of steam coming from the restaurants.

You’ll be tempted to try your hand at playing ring toss or pinball to win an array of prizes. If you’re looking to have some fun while attempting to snag a beer, simply throw a ring over the bottle’s neck and the drink is yours! They are also many cliche prizes such as stuffed animals and colorful toys you can win.

When compared to the Flower Market, Hsinchu’s Green Grass Lake Night Market comes out on top. In terms of crowds and food options, this market has a lot more to offer. More importantly, the overall atmosphere of the market is much more inviting. Pulling up a stool, you’ll be wanting to order some barbeque, eat some food, and soak in the night.

Nightlife in Hsinchu is something that is seriously lacking. It is a shame that the night market culture in Hsinchu is something that is slowly fading into the background. The best way to explore a city is by being around its food and people. A night market offers both. For now, Green Grass Lake Night Market is one of the few places where you can weekly feel a part of Hsinchu. Hopefully, the soul of the city will endure and even shine brighter as Hsinchu moves forward.
